It is a while ago, but I ran the vWLC as a test for a while. It was running version 7.3 and I also tested NCM on it.
I had to create a file named "Cisco vWLC-1.3.6.1.4.1.9.1.1631.ConfigMgmt-Commands" in the Program Files(x86)\SolarWinds\Orion\NCM\DeviceTypes directory.
See attached file.
The trick for autodetection of devicetype was to include the correct SNMP oid in the filename. Each WLC model uses a different oid. For the various WLCs around our network I created these file names:
Cisco 2125 WLC-1.3.6.1.4.1.9.1.828.ConfigMgmt-Commands
Cisco 4402 WLC-1.3.6.1.4.1.14179.ConfigMgmt-Commands
Cisco 5508 WLC-1.3.6.1.4.1.9.1.1069.ConfigMgmt-Commands
